  • Thai Constellation Monstera

    • Previously owned one from Costa Farms - 1.5' feet tall. Paid $100 to have it shipped; wrought with problems from the beginning. Incorrect information supplied by the plant care said it was full sun, moderate watering. Upon put in full sun the leaves withered and died. Attempts to shield plant from the mild sun didn't help. Repotted 3 weeks after purchase, discovered deep set root rot. Salvaging attempted through hydroponic tubes. 3 of 4 nodes died within a week. Rot finally took the only surviving root + node in mid June.

Repurchased a new one through a different Miami vender in early July for $40. Put plant in part sun/shade on the porch. One leaf developed a sunburn from an exceptionally hot day. Cut off the dead bits and attempted to create a hudmity dish to mimic the natural habitat with moderate success. Plant now (happily) lives shielded by a Raven ZZ for protection from the sun.

  • Amaryllis (Red)

    • Technically owned by MIL. Took over the plant and removed all the decayed limbs in early March. Repotted it in April to prevent root balling. Little to no movement for months until mid July - A leaf appeared through the top of the plant followed by similar shoots in late July. As of 8.7./26 - multiple giant leaves have sprouted out the top after months of being dormant. I'm excited to see it bloom this year after months of nothing.

  • Raven ZZ

    • Beloved plant. New shoots are a vivid bright green before slowing turning black. It can survive neglect and infrequent watering as well as being repotted without fuss. Currently shields a Monstera from the "harsh" zone 8b light with a part sun/shade on a high shelf. It did a lot better indoors where the light level was more closely regulated by a south facing window but due to the introduction of a cat, who eats plants out of frustration of not getting his way, I ultimate put it outside where new growth isn't as frequent.

  • Coleus (Red)

    • Picked up on a whim in March due to wanting a variety of colors; later found out plant is toxic. The vivid purple and red color is striking against normally green plants. Not quite a variagated color but stands out in a plant bed. As the plant has grown, the older shoots can sometimes kill emerging leaves which has lead to pot rotations. Dead leaves are uncommon but does enjoy bottom watering.

  • Coleus (Green/Purple)

    • Similar to the red variety, the abstract colors were a major selling point for me. Dead leaves from the underbelly are more common than the red variaty. Strangely. This plant also needs support steaks unlike the red version. Together they are only 2 of many that have been moved into an 8" pot. They are thriving beautifully.

  • Asiatic Lily (Orange)

    • Another pain point. The original I purchased as a mature plant said it needed full sun.
With full sun it quickly burned and lost all its beautiful flowers. Clipped the dead bits and put it into a part sun/shade location; unfortunately the flowers never came back. New leaves seem to be emerging from the soil after the main plant died from root rot - decorative pots are beautiful until they kill your plants.

  • Garden Tulip / Mystery plant)

    • In early spring I attempted to reuse old soil from dead plants. I followed this tutorial on sanitizing soil and it seemed to work out. Upon opening the soil box to repot another plant I discovered a mystery bulb that Google lens has deemed as a "garden tulip". Nothing of note has sprouted from this but its only been a few months at this point. As of 8.7.26 - There appeared to be some sort of mystery fungus on some of the (few) leaves which I removed. Monitoring this.

  • Heart Leaf Philodendron

    • A gift to my MIL when she was in the hospital. I took it over, as what I thought was temporarily as she got better. It has been a few months and it has yet to start cascading, I'm thinking a new pot may be in order but I haven't given it much thought. Repotting should happen this month after some research.

  • Begonia (Red)

    • This one irks me greatly. When I purchased this it was relatively small with not completely formed buds. Within a week they were flowering and beautiful!
Then it started. The flowers would periodically bloom, die within a few days and new ones would sprout in their place until it didn't. :| The image attached is before it wilted and died just before summer started. It weas also strangely the only one to be repotted into an orange pot and also the only one to have died. Could it have been some residue on the pot from shipment?
